The fake bench gear problem

Test benches have a counterfeit problem to rival the sensor world's: the most respected brands are the most cloned, the fakes are convincing, and the damage shows up as tips that die in weeks or a meter that reads wrong on a live circuit. The good news — genuine parts have physical tells you can check, and most come down to weight. Here's the aggregated checklist.

Hakko tips — the most-counterfeited item on the bench

Fake Hakko T12 and T18 tips are an industry. The reliable tell is weight and plating: a genuine T12-C1 ≈ 7.7 g, a counterfeit ≈ 7.24 g, with visibly thinner plating that erodes fast. Voltlog put a genuine and a fake T12 on a scope and measured the performance gap directly. Genuine tips ship from authorized distributors, often with a Hakko anti-counterfeit hologram.

JBC cartridges — the clone-station side effect

The rise of JBC-clone stations (Aixun, Sugon, Jabe) created a parallel market in C245 cartridges — and genuine-branded JBC cartridges sold on marketplaces are a documented counterfeit concern, with fresh EEVblog threads into 2026. The stations themselves are honest JBC-compatible designs; it's the cartridges where quality swings from "tests identical to genuine" to junk.

  • Buy the station and the cartridges separately: a clone station is fine; buy at least one genuine C245 from an authorized channel as your daily driver and reference.
  • Heat-up and recovery against that reference tells you if a clone cartridge is any good.

Fake Fluke — a safety issue, not just a value one

A multimeter that misreads on a live mains circuit is dangerous, and counterfeit Flukes are common enough that Fluke runs an official counterfeit-awareness page with a serial-verification portal. US Customs reported the large majority of seized fake Flukes came from online-marketplace listings.

  • Weigh it: a genuine 87V ≈ 395 g (±5 g); fakes run 280–330 g — the missing mass is missing safety engineering.
  • Verify the serial on Fluke's portal.
  • Never trust a bargain Fluke for CAT-rated mains work — buy from an authorized distributor, full stop.

The rule that covers all of it

  1. Price sanity is a data point. A genuine-branded part at a third of the real price is answering a question you didn't ask.
  2. Weigh the small stuff. Tips, cartridges and meters all have published genuine weights; a cheap scale is the highest-ROI tool on your bench.
  3. Buy consumables genuine, tools you can verify. A clone station you can inspect is fine; a clone tip you'll replace monthly and a clone safety meter are not.
  4. Authorized distributors exist for a reason — the "grey market saving" is often $5 against a tip that lasts a quarter as long.
